Stanford Engineering professors named to National Academy of Engineering

Professors Peter W. Glynn and Helmut Krawinkler have been honored for their contributions to simulation methodology and stochastic modeling.

Two Stanford Engineering faculty members whose contributions range from simulation modeling to earthquake engineering have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

The professors -- Peter W. Glynn and Henry Krawinkler -- were among 66 new members of the NAE, one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

Peter W. Glynn, honored for his contributions to simulation methodology and stochastic modeling, is the Thomas W. Ford Professor and Chair of the Management Science and Engineering Department.

Helmut Krawinkler, honored for developing performance-based earthquake engineering procedures for evaluating and rehabilitating buildings, is the John A. Blume Professor Emeritus of Engineering.

NAE membership honors those who have made "outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice or education." The election of professors Glynn and Krawinkler brings the number of Stanford Engineering NAE members to 84.

The NAE also elected Norbert Joseph Pelc, professor and associate chair for research of the radiology department, and professor of electrical engineering (by courtesy) for developing algorithms and technologies for MRI, CT and hybrid X-ray/MRI imaging. Steve M. Gorelick, Cyrus F. Tolman professor of environmental earth system science, was selected for his work in optimization techniques and transport models for groundwater and remediation of contaminated aquifers.
